Mango Tree - Tommy Atkins
Mango Tree - Tommy Atkins
The Tommy Atkins mango tree is a prized tropical fruit tree, renowned for its abundant, well-sized fruits and exceptional disease resistance. This versatile cultivar adapts successfully to various climates, making it ideal for both commercial orchards and home gardens. Growing to a height of 4-5 meters, the Tommy Atkins mango tree begins fruit production at just three years old.
The Tommy Atkins mango is distinguished by its large fruits featuring beautiful red-yellow skin and luscious yellow flesh. These mangoes are not only visually appealing but also boast a long shelf-life, making them perfect for both fresh consumption and commercial distribution.
To cultivate a thriving Tommy Atkins mango tree, plant it in a location receiving full to partial sun. This tree prefers well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.2. Water every 2-3 days during the flowering period, and apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer before flowering to boost fruit production. Maintain 3-4 main branches and keep the canopy open through regular pruning for optimal growth and fruit yield.
Harvest Tommy Atkins mangoes 4-5 months after flowering, when the skin develops its characteristic purple-red or red-yellow hue. These nutritious fruits are rich in vitamins A, B, and C, as well as fiber and potassium, offering numerous health benefits. They may even help alleviate heartburn and indigestion.
For year-round care, apply organic mulch to protect the roots and maintain soil moisture. In colder regions, protect your Tommy Atkins mango tree from frost if temperatures drop below 5°C in winter.
With proper attention, your Tommy Atkins mango tree will reward you with delicious, nutritious fruits for years to come, making it an excellent addition to any tropical fruit garden.
