I Love Growing NUTS!
Here are a few tips I can share with you on how to care for your nut trees:
Pruning:
Nut trees should be pruned annually to encourage healthy growth and improve the yield of nuts. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring, before the tree begins to grow new leaves. It is best to remove any dead, diseased, or damaged wood, as well as any crossing or rubbing branches that could damage the tree over time.
Thinning:
Thinning is the process of removing some of the branches from the tree to improve air circulation and light penetration. This is important for nut trees because it helps to prevent the growth of mold and other fungal diseases that thrive in moist, shaded environments. Thinning should be done in late winter or early spring, before the tree begins to grow new leaves.
Heading:
Heading is the process of cutting back the tips of the branches to encourage bushier growth. This is often done on nut trees to help improve the tree's overall structure and to encourage the development of new shoots that will produce nuts. Heading cuts should be made just above a bud that is facing in the desired direction of growth.
Shaping:
Shaping a nut tree involves training the branches to grow in a particular pattern or direction. This is usually done when the tree is 18 months old and should be repeated every year to maintain the desired shape. When shaping a nut tree, it is important to maintain good ventilation and to ensure that the tree receives sufficient light. This will help to promote healthy growth and encourage the development of a strong, sturdy tree.
In general, nut trees require regular maintenance to maintain healthy growth and promote a good yield of nuts.
By following these steps, you can help to ensure that your nut trees are healthy and productive for many years to come. For further advice, visit me at BuyGrow nursery at 94 Doorly rd. Colleen Glen, Port Elizabeth-Gqeberha.
